KIEV, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) — Ukraine celebrated the National Unity Day on Wednesday to consolidate the people amid the crisis in the country.

In a televised address to the nation, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukrainians are different, but they are all united by the desire to live in peace, happiness and with loved ones.

“We are all united by one desire: to live in peace, happily, as one family, with children, with parents. And we have every right to all of this. Because we are at home, we are in Ukraine” , said Zelensky.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said Ukrainians celebrate Unity Day to show “friends and foes” that Ukraine is united even in difficult times.

“Ukrainians have rejected their differences and unite in the face of possible threats. For a prosperous future. We know how to do this, and our unity is our best weapon,” Shmyhal wrote on his official Telegram channel.

As part of the celebrations, Ukrainian enthusiasts unfurled a 200-meter-long national flag at the Olympic Stadium in Kyiv.

Blue and yellow flags were waved at government buildings, private homes and cars across the country to show people’s unity.

Children from many schools and kindergartens were invited to wear vyshyvanka, traditional Ukrainian ethnic clothes decorated with embroidery patterns.

In addition, the Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine launched the Unity Train from the city of Rakhiv in western Ukraine to the city of Mariupol in the east, which carried the Ukrainian flag across different regions of the country.

Ambassadors from European Union countries laid flowers at the Memorial Wall in Kyiv to mark Unity Day, showing their support for Ukraine and paying tribute to all those who fell in the conflict in the Eastern Ukraine since 2014.

Some Western media have claimed that Russia may invade Ukraine on February 16. Moscow has repeatedly denied any plans to invade Ukraine.

Earlier Wednesday, Ukrainian Defense Minister Olexiy Reznikov said the situation at Ukraine’s borders remained stable.
